OSPE-FCC March Luncheon Program

TOPIC: BUCKEYE BULLET

For this presentation, Dr. Rizzoni will discuss the development of the Buckeye Bullet, the fastest electric propelled vehicle. Dr. Rizzoni will discuss the prospects of the electric vehicle in the coming years.  After the presentation, the members will tour the OSU car facilities in groups of around 20 where the Buckeye Bullet is housed.  In addition, the members may walk pass other student auto projects.

PRESENTER: Giorgio Rizzoni, director, Center for Automotive Research

  Giorgio Rizzoni is a professor at The Ohio State    University in the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and is the director of the Center for Automotive Research. He received bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Michigan in 1980, 1982 and 1986, respectively.

Rizzoni’s research interests are in energy and transportation systems, with special interest in alternative fuels and future ground vehicle propulsion systems, including: advanced engines; electric and hybrid-electric drivetrains; energy storage systems; and hydrogen fuel cell systems. He has contributed to the development of a graduate curriculum in these areas, and has served as the director of three U.S. Department of Energy Graduate Automotive Technology Education Centers of Excellence at Ohio State.

Since 1999, Rizzoni has been responsible for the growth of an automotive industry research consortium with sponsorship from twenty automotive manufacturers, suppliers and government agencies. In 2008 he launched a consortium of electric utilities and automotive original equipment manufacturers—SMART@CAR—to study issues related to plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles and the smart grid. The consortium sees the participation of some twelve electric utility and automotive companies.

Rizzoni is a Fellow of both Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
