Title: “Drones -  Industry Usage Presentation”

Synopsis: The use of UAVs has skyrocketed within the last 10 years. Here at Burgess and Niple, we have used our drone to aid us in facility inspections of various structures, surveying, and reconnaissance missions while performing wetland delineations.  The quality of the drone video/photographs and can take plus all of its autonomous features which can be utilized provide a very useful tool.  I have been a licensed pilot since November 2017 and have since then flown many different structures with the drone.  The presentation will highlight acquiring the knowledge and skills to fly the drone legally and commercially, the drone model itself and its capabilities (DJI Mavic Pro), the projects it has been used for along with photos and some video, and what our plans are for future use. 

PRESENTER: Michael J Kronander, PE Structural Engineer

BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Kronander joined Burgess & Niple in June 2015 as an engineer in the Facility Inspection Section.  He is involved with inspections and evaluations of bridges, dams, river locks, and other structures.  He has participated in more than 300 bridge inspections and has climbed on more than 100 bridges in a total of 8 states.  Mr. Kronander’s bridge inspection experience includes the use of both destructive and nondestructive testing methods to evaluate structural conditions.  He has experience with AASHTO and FHWA inspection manuals, PONTIS, BrM, and a variety of other structural evaluation and inspection software.  Mr. Kronander has performed load rating analyses on several bridge types and gusset plates.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and is a Professional Engineer in seven states. He is a certified UAV Remote Pilot, ASBI Grouting Technician, Level 1 Bonded Concrete specialist through PTI, and Level 2 SPRAT technician.

A certificate for 1 hour of Professional Development for attending the program will be presented at the luncheon.

BIOGRAPHY: Patrick Herl has worked for CONTECH Engineered Solutions since 2004 serving as a Project Consultant in Ohio.  He is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.  Patrick works closely with the civil engineering community providing technical assistance with the design and construction of prefabricated culverts and bridge systems.  Patrick is a past president of ASHE Central Ohio and is also a member of The Engineers Club of Columbus, the Ohio County Engineers Association and the Ohio Contractors Association.

Title:  “Innovative Design of the SunTrust Stadium Field”

Synopsis: Professor Khoury, in collaboration with the Chief Engineer from ADS (Pipe manufacturer) will present a very interesting project on the new Atlanta Falcons stadium on the turf monitoring, drainage, etc."

PRESENTER: Issam Khoury, PhD, PE, Assistant Professor - Department of Civil Engineering, Ohio University

BIOGRAPHY:  Issam Khoury, PhD, Issam Khoury is a registered Professional Engineer and recently completed his PhD.  He is an assistant Professor at Ohio University Department of Civil Engineering and is the assistant director of the Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE). He has been involved in instrumentation and research projects for the Ohio Department of Transportation, New York Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. His expertise includes field sensor installation, field data acquisition and analysis, material sampling and testing for both asphalt and concrete, and the ability to conduct lab testing of materials to acquire material properties for use in analysis and design.  He has co-authored several technical reports and papers that have been published in major research journals and presented at national conferences.

PRESENTER: James Goddard

BIOGRAPHY: James Goddard graduated from North Carolina State University with a Metrology degree in 1967.  In 2010 he retired from ADS (Advanced drainage Systems) where he was the chief engineer for more than 22 years.  He is a registered Professional engineer and was awarded the STM Award of Merit (2009), ASTM Paul Finn Memorial Award (2013).  He serves on several committees including:  ASTM D35 Vice Chairmen, ASTM F17 Membership Secretary, ASTM F17.62 Vice Chairman, TRB Subsurface Soil-Structure Interaction Emeritus Member (2012), TRB Subsurface Soil-Structure Interaction Committee Chairman -( 2000 - 2006). NCHRP Panel Member (Several) Plastic Pipe Institute Lifetime Member (2011).  Jim is currently a consultant and still travels around the US and the world.

Title: ”Asphalt Pavement Rehabilitation Techniques

Synopsis: The presenter will be discussing why the state has taken a major shift towards preventative road maintenance and the tools that are being used.   Treatments that will be discussed will be crack sealing, micro surfacing, cape sealing, chip seal interlayer’s and a new technology that will be tested in Delaware County in 2018. He will instruct the attendees on the appropriate timeframe to use such treatments for maximum results.  Finally, the City of Cincinnati and Columbus have taken part in large preventative maintenance projects over the past several years.  He will review results and the unique way Cincinnati has administered their projects.

PRESENTER: Zack Helm, Technical Sales and Marketing, Strawser Construction, Inc

BIOGRAPHY:  Zack Helm, graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 2007.  I have been working with Strawser Construction since 2012 but have grown up in the pavement preservation industry throughout my entire life.  My main responsibility at SCI is to educate agencies on the different tools on the market to help extend pavement life.  I assist with street assessments, specification updates, & new product/business development.
